On Friday, Oct. 23, police allegedly witnessed multiple drug deals in the East Elm Street, Riverdale Street area of West Springfield.

As a result, Matthew Lecca, of West Springfield, and Shawn Barron, of Agawam, were arrested on individual charges of:

- Trafficking in cocaine (100-200 grams),

- Possession to distribute cocaine,

- Possession to distribute heroin,

- and Conspiracy to violate drug laws, police said.

In addition to these charges, Lecca was also charged with motor vehicle offenses, police said.

The incidents that led to their arrests began to unfold on Sunday around 5:30 p.m. while West Springfield Police were doing some undercover surveillance of the area.

Police allegedly saw Lecca drive a Honda Pilot to the Bel-Air Motel on Riverdale (Route 5) with Barron as the car’s only passenger. The men then sold drugs to a “known narcotics user,” police alleged.

Lecca then drove over to a nearby unopened business where he and Barron allegedly made multiple drug sales to different people over the course of 30 minutes, police said.

Lecca and Barron left and the Honda was soon stopped by police while driving on Kings Highway.

Lecca and Barron began to fight.

“Mr. Lecca and Mr. Barron began arguing at the scene,” police said, “both blaming the other for the circumstances and the arrest.”

During the arrests police allegedly seized:

- 170 grams of cocaine,

- 85 bags of heroin,

- $1,500,

- 2 digital scales,

- and Drug paraphernalia, police said.
